Miloš Jovanović, President of the New Democratic Party of Serbia, said today that the party would take part in the upcoming elections as the authentic right and stressed that it must win. Victory, he said, means that after the regime is replaced, the next government cannot be formed without its participation.

At the session of the party’s Main Board, he stressed that the upcoming elections were exceptional in their significance and in what was at stake, and unprecedented in recent Serbian history.

“Rest assured that since 1990 and the reintroduction of a multiparty system, we have not had more fateful elections in this country,” Jovanović said.

He explained that the elections were more fateful than any before because their historical significance lay in a new political moment: the existence of a political reality that had never previously been present. For the first time since the breakup of the former state, he said, we face the risk that the still predominantly patriotic outlook and sentiment of the Serbian people and Serbia’s citizens will be completely erased, first from the political scene and then from public life.

“For the first time, we also face the risk that the struggle for Serbian national interests will end after these elections, and that the final stage of Serbia’s subjugation, defeat and historical humiliation will be completed,” Jovanović stressed.

He said that the upcoming elections would decide whether we surrender as a nation or continue the struggle as a nation.

“Nothing more and nothing less is at stake in the upcoming elections,” Jovanović stressed. He added that this was best illustrated by the reactions to the death of Ratko Mladić, the wartime commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide and other war crimes committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jovanović added that the overwhelming majority of Serbia’s citizens rightly regarded Mladić as “a symbol of the freedom and struggle of the Serbian people” in the wars imposed on them in the 1990s, and stressed that New DSS had paid him due tribute.

He said that part of the opposition, including the Student List, had not seen fit to respond and had shamefully let the event pass in silence. Another part of the opposition, he said, had long since accepted the views and lies of our enemies from the 1990s as historical truth and had therefore responded by regarding Mladić as a criminal.

“As for the regime, in its well-known cowardly manner, and in order to conceal its constant and treacherous anti-Serbian actions, it allowed a few banners to be hung on a few overpasses,” Jovanović said. He stressed that those banners could not disguise the fact that Serbia’s President, Aleksandar Vučić, did not dare attend Mladić’s funeral.

Jovanović also described the Student List as a kind of experiment, representing a new way of coming to power or fighting for power.

“But while the so-called Student List is designed to participate in and influence a change of government — in which all of us who oppose this government are allies — it is certainly not designed to influence the much-needed change in policy,” he said.

Jovanović said that New DSS and the Monarchists, as the authentic right, considered Serbia’s cooperation with the European Union desirable and necessary and would do everything to strengthen it. However, he stressed that EU membership would bring Serbia far more harm than benefit.

NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF SERBIA

Our choice is perfectly clear: a political struggle for the democratic transformation of Serbia. This means that Serbia must be built on the foundations of a democratic parliamentary system.

Loyalty to this principle represents the essence of the Democratic Party of Serbia. Political beliefs come above all else for us — above leaders, above interests, and above day-to-day politics.
